About ePIC Blockchain Technologies
Based in Toronto, Ontario, ePIC Blockchain stands at the forefront of semiconductor and system design for Proof of Work (PoW) Blockchains. Offering a range of products and services, including Universal Mining Controller (UMC), Fleet Enhancement Kits, and customized mining systems, ePIC is dedicated to improving the performance and efficiency of mining operations worldwide.
ePIC Blockchain joins forces with Block to co-develop a modular mining platform
At ePIC Blockchain Technologies, we are excited to announce our involvement in a large-scale project with the Proto team at Block Inc and Core Scientific. We have worked with Block to design and build a modular mining platform, an innovative solution that addresses the key challenges faced by large-scale mining operations today.
The mining industry is continually evolving, and at ePIC Blockchain Technologies, we recognize the need for more efficient, reliable, and sustainable mining practices. This pilot project is designed to address these demands. By leveraging the latest advancements in ASIC technology from the Proto team, we are set to co-design this new platform that later will be built out in one of the Core’s existing facilities.
As an established industry standard, the current mining rig design is a solid foundation for mining operations worldwide. The goal of this pilot is to find a way to develop a solution that integrates effortlessly with existing infrastructures while amplifying operational efficiency and minimizing total ownership costs.
Key Features:
-
- Infrastructure cost savings: The platform is projected to significantly reduce infrastructure and networking equipment costs, with an estimated 38.7% savings in new infrastructure per MW build-out and two-thirds savings in networking equipment for air-cooled facilities. For immersion facilities, the density and power increases are 2-4x. By increasing the power density on the shelf, we can save on infrastructure build-out costs while consuming the same amount of power in a denser environment.
-
- Enhanced capacity and uptime: By redesigning the system with more efficient components and increasing the amount of power per linear foot on the rack, the MMP aims to boost capacity by 1.72x within existing facilities and improve uptime by targeting and reducing the most failure-prone parts of traditional rigs. ePIC’s mining firmware allows for agility and reactivity in optimizing power usage and mining efficiency, even in extreme scenarios. If one of the hashboards fails, the power will decrease across all three phases on the PDU, allowing the miner to continue operating. If one section of the PSU fails, the hashboards will scale down to accommodate the remaining power.
-
- Form factor’s simultaneous compatibility and innovation: The redesigned chassis makes all non-ASIC components long-life reusable items that are considered part of the infrastructure rather than the miner. This approach maintains compatibility with existing mining facility form factors and allows for the use of higher-quality components. Whether in an air-cooled or immersion facility, the only components that need upgrading in the system are the hashboards.
-
- Smooth user experience and serviceability: we’ve designed with user convenience and serviceability at its core, featuring minimal screws to simplify maintenance. Essential components are accessible from the front, allowing users to perform adjustments without disassembling the entire system. The PSU and hashboards feature a cableless design and are easily swappable, facilitating quick replacements or upgrades. Additionally, the machine’s layout allows for repairs directly on the rack, streamlining maintenance in large operations.
- Enhanced electrical Infrastructure efficiency: The design accommodates all plug types and balances power across all three phases, minimizing harmonics and heat. This allows mining operators to use more power in the facility, which may currently be lost to heat and harmonics. Efficient power use is expected to reduce the payback period for infrastructure investments. For new facilities that will migrate directly to three-phase power, the miner can accept a higher voltage and bypass current PDU requirements. Older facilities with C13-based PDUs can save on electrical upgrade costs by continuing to use their existing PDUs with the system instead of replacing them with newer C19-based PDUs. It’s also compatible with C19-based PDUs. If a mining operator decides to upgrade their facility to three-phase power, the PSU can easily be swapped for a 12kW, 20kW, or 30kW PSU, depending on the cooling available for the miner.
Looking ahead, ePIC Blockchain is committed to driving innovation and efficiency in the mining industry through our collaboration with Core Scientific and the Proto team at Block Inc. This represents a significant step forward in addressing the evolving challenges of large-scale mining operations. By integrating the latest ASIC technology and advanced design features, we anticipate that this will not only achieve substantial infrastructure cost savings and operational efficiencies but also set new industry standards. As we continue to refine and expand this platform, we envision a future where mining operations are more sustainable, reliable, and adaptable to both current and emerging demands. Our ongoing efforts aim to deliver unparalleled value and performance, ensuring that our solutions remain at the forefront of mining technology advancements.

North America’s BTC ASIC Miner (ePIC Gen_1)
How it started
Not too long ago, ePIC rolled out the SC200 Mining Rig for the Siacoin network. This milestone was the culmination of hard work and perseverance of a small, but talented team. Now, looking back, we are so proud of this achievement. It is easy for industry arm-chair quarterbacks to downplay the efforts it takes to design and to produce a mining rig. They would often say, “it’s just a few lines of code.” That may be so for an algorithm, but math alone is not enough to make a profitable mining rig.
From concept to reality, the path to producing a product requires many steps:
- designing, fabricating, and testing the mining ASIC
- integrating all the components on the PCB
- validating the performance and power of the hashboard
- modeling the air flow and heat dissipation through the chassis of the rig
- developing firmware to control the performance of the rig
- writing software APIs to communicate with the external world
- implementing factory tests for quality control
We encountered many challenges along the way, and we took them all in stride, making them into valuable learning opportunities.
What has happened in the last 12 months?
Customer Engagement
Not only did we learn how to bring a product to market from scratch, but along our journey we learned a tremendous amount about our mining customers — especially, their challenging and ever-changing requirements. To that end, we introduced ePIC’s Universal Mining Control (UMC) and companion firmware. These ePIC offerings are compatible with mining systems and enable enterprises to maximize the full potential of their mining fleet. The UMC and firmware will allow mining fleets to respond quickly to fluctuations in their requirements, most notably, the changes in power. Fleets will be able to ramp up and ramp down quickly accordingly. Enterprises can respond to power costs, coin prices, curtailments, and so on with the API to control performance and efficiency.

Supply Chain
As a company that produces physical products, we understand the critical importance of supply chain management. The past two years have emphasized this. We have already built strategic relationships with key suppliers, such as TSMC and ST Micro. As we grow our business, we have engaged multiple vendors, and even collaborated with them to make improvements. One such example is with PSUs — to make them more efficient while keeping the costs reasonable. By taking ownership of the supply chain, from materials to place of manufacture, we ensure that our products are robust with a low failure rate.

System Integration
We have a track record of bringing all these things together. But more than that, we understand how all the components work with each other through fine-tuned system integration. From the semiconductors to the software, from the PSUs to the heat dissipation, each of these components has a number of input variables that must be considered such as operating frequency, voltage, output performance, power efficiency, and so on. We can build systems that are tightly integrated, but have the agility to respond to the customer’s requirements, which are usually driven by market dynamics.
Intel Blockscale
With everything that we have learned and with all the skills and know-how we’ve developed, we are excited to be working on a Bitcoin miner using Intel’s Blockscale chip. Our talented team is well-equipped to design and to deliver this system. Intel’s advanced technology on Blockscale requires experienced engineering.
The Blockscale chip has a wide operating range. This allows for flexibility, but it also creates serious technical challenges. The chip has temperature and voltage sensing capabilities, which we can read, among other parameters. We can then program the chip to find the “sweet spot” for hashing. But, as one can imagine, the temperature and voltage will fluctuate, and many adjustments will need to be made to keep that chip operating in a stable state. All this is for just one chip.
Now, scale this effort to the multiple hundreds of chips in a single mining system. It would be simplistic to think that each chip would be operating identically on a hashboard, and treating them all the same would not maximize the full potential of the hashing power.
Now, scale this effort again, to the thousands of mining rigs that are in a fleet of miners. The engineering effort is enormous.

True to our Fundamentals
We’ve come a long way over the last few years. We’ve grown organically to manage sustainable growth. We’ve tackled new and exciting challenges. Through and through, ePIC’s guiding principle remains the same — bring together world-class engineering and focused operational excellence to deliver dependable, robust and reliable technology.
Final words
Stay tuned and imagine where ePIC can be at our next inflection point.
Will it be our Gen_2 BTC miner? Will secure real-time settlements on the blockchain be the next driver for high bandwidth and low power designs? Will better HW infrastructure accelerate the adoption of a decentralized internet (aka Web3)?
The constant will be the build-outs from ePIC into these emerging blockchain markets. We are ready and we think differently.

Why Should Crypto Miners Use Immersion Cooling?
As crypto continues to take the world by storm, the competition for acquiring PoW cryptocurrencies is becoming fierce. While most miners, including large-scale enterprise ones, still run their fleet with stock Firmware (FW) and in forced air, the sophisticated and forward-looking miners are looking for additional edge and performance.
With the increase in complexity and power of mining rigs continuing to increase, one problem has continued to linger… heat. The enormous processing power of mining rigs produces large quantities of heat. When mining rigs get too hot they don’t perform as efficiently and in extreme cases, they can stop working altogether. Thankfully, there are a variety of solutions to combat this common problem associated with crypto mining rigs.
Location
A typical solution that professional crypto miners have deployed, is simply relocating their entire fleet to a colder geographic location. However, this approach only makes sense for a small portion of mining rig owners and is not scalable.
Forced Air Fans
Fans are the current standard model of cooling mining rigs; the machines come equipped with cooling fans and the Firmware to regulate the fans. For many smaller crypto miners, fans can get the job just fine. But when scaling a large fleet of crypto mining rigs, it is important to reduce operating costs and increase performance and profitability. A great way to achieve this is by using a lesser-known cooling method called “liquid immersion cooling”.
Immersion Cooling
Image via coindesk.com
This method of cooling involves submerging your rig in a thermally conductive but electrically insulating dielectric liquid. While this concept sounds complex, this just means the rig is submerged in a liquid that keeps it cool. Immersion is the most economically viable method of cooling, as well as scaling large fleets of mining rigs while reducing costs. The benefits of immersion cooling are quite substantial, which is why it is trending now in enterprise-scale mining operations. However, before addressing immersion cooling it is worth noting that immersion eliminates the need for a cooling fan (and the power consumption and noise associated). Instead of using a fan or relocating to a colder geographic location, the entire mining rig is instead submerged in a solution that maintains an optimal temperature.
Why does heat matter?
To understand why immersion cooling is the superior method, first, we need to revisit how heat affects mining rigs. In a high-heat environment, the mining rigs will run less efficiently due to leakage current, which will lead to a vicious cycle where the chips will keep drawing more power because of the heat, and the heat causes more leakage so that it’s perpetually drawing more power while the performance does not increase proportionally. The excessive heat and power draw will also cause components in the machine to melt and potentially cause irreversible damage. Fortunately, most of the popular miners have temperature sensors so that the mining rigs will shut down when the temperature exceeds a defined threshold.
The heat is exactly why overlocking air-cooled mining rigs is such a delicate balance: on one hand, you want to draw more power to achieve higher hash rates, on the other, the heat kills efficiency. This is how immersion comes in. The dielectric liquid in the immersion tank cools the miners quickly creating better conditions for efficient overclocking where the system can achieve higher performance vs. air-cooled ones.
Types of Immersion Cooling
There are generally two variables in the immersion cooling set-up: single-loop and double-loop, and two types of liquids: single-phase and double-phase.
In a single loop, the dielectric liquid is pumped directly through a radiator. The fluid is cooled in the radiator and then fed back into the ASIC reservoir.
This shows a single-loop system. Image via Shun Zhang
In a double loop, the dielectric liquid is first pumped to a heat exchanger. The heat from the exchanger is then transferred to a water line. The heated water is then pumped from its loop to a cooling tower or dry cooler to cool down. This second loop usually contains a solution that is a better conductor of heat than simple water.
This shows a double-loop cooling system. Image via Fujitsu
In a single-phase coolant, the fluid stays in the liquid state. This is the simplest solution to immersion cooling and is very tolerant to errors. For example, if a pump stops working, the miner will shut down when the temperature reaches the limit. As the liquid cools, the miner will resume.
This shows the mechanisms of a single-phase coolant. Image via grcooling
In a double-phase coolant, the fluid switches between the liquid and the gas states. The cooling is achieved after a series of evaporation and condensation. This setup requires more precision or otherwise will risk damaging the machinery.

Immersion Cooling Setup Considerations
It’s crucial to remember that immersion-compatible firmware is essential to the whole operation. Depending on how the firmware is set up, running air-cool mode on immersion-cooled machines may cause unnecessary hassles, e.g. excessive power to the fans while they are not required in the fluids, not achieving the maximal performance because of the clock limits imposed by the air-cooled firmware.
So before considering immersion, it’s important to research what mining machines the immersion-compatible firmware supports
Additional Benefits
In general, immersion operation costs about the same or even less than the traditional air-cooled operation while providing higher performance. Simply put: it is a far more efficient operation -a crucial consideration for large-scale enterprise miners. As a side benefit, Immersion cooling also greatly reduces the amount of noise produced by mining rigs. Additionally, it also reduces maintenance costs since it’s now more difficult for dust or debris to enter the system. These are just a select few of the many reasons why immersion cooling is a viable option for enterprise and at-scale crypto mining operations.
Immersion is the Future
Immersion is quickly gaining the reputation of being a very scalable technology for large deployments of data centers and cloud servers. Companies such as Intel have touted immersion cooling for their data centers as a revolutionary technology and thus invested large sums of money. Intel alone is investing $700 million into immersion cooling research and development for their data centers and cloud technologies. It is likely that as time continues we will see more industry pioneers get behind immersion cooling.
ePIC Blockchain Technologies supplies reliable immersion cooling technologies. Our solution spans the electronics, MCU board, and FW to upgrade an existing fleet, or to build a customized large-scale immersion cooling fleet from scratch. ePIC is a North American-based company focused on developing PoW (Proof of Work) blockchain chips, customized mining rigs, and technologies to enhance the efficiency and performance of large-scale mining fleets.
Conclusion
For crypto miners, immersion has become a sought-after method of cooling. As crypto-mining competition continues to grow, large enterprise miners will need to ensure their fleet is as efficient and high-performing as possible. While immersion cooling is still a relatively new concept for many people, now is the perfect time to make the switch… before the competition catches up. At the very least, it would be a wise idea to speak with the immersion technology experts at ePIC Blockchain Technologies.

Staff Special: Crypto Mining @Home — Level 2: Mining on a Condo Balcony
In the last blog post, we shared the most accessible level of crypto mining at home. In this post, we are showcasing home-mining that involves more skills. Our engineer, foenix, walks us through how he sets up his miner on his balcony.
Miner Profile
Name: foenix
Mining Experience: 5 years
Motto: Passive, silent money is good money
As an electrical engineer by trade, working on chip design, I was always fascinated by how generic hardware, such as GPUs, can be used for other applications other than 3D graphics. When Bitcoin became popular, my first encounter with mining was with an old i7–3930k. It was a great introduction to how the whole ecosystem worked. I then moved on to ETH using old AMD cards that were lying around, and now, I’m into ASICs designed strictly for mining.
With limited power at home, I am always looking for hardware that can help power blockchains that provide valuable services. With SC200 miners, I am able to mine the Siacoin needed to use the awesome Sia-powered tools such as Skynet and Siastream. Currently, I am working to transition all my digital backups and media onto the Sia network, even hosting a bit of storage myself to help contribute.
With that said, I have my miners set up on my balcony. In Toronto where I reside, the average monthly temperature does not exceed 30°C, which is perfect for mining. If you live in a colder climate, mining outdoors might be a good option for you.
One of the benefits of mining on the balcony is that you don’t hear the noise once you close the door, and the setup does not add to the clutter at home.
Materials Needed
A plastic storage box
– This is the one I have, but you can use any storage box you like
Your miner
A PSU
A router or wifi extender
A furnace or car filter
A power bar
An ethernet cable
A box cutter and/or drill
The Process
I cut two holes in the storage box. One is for the freestanding power outlet at the bottom, and one is for ventilation with the orange-framed car filter on the side. If your outlet is on the wall, then you should cut a hole on the side of the box, just big enough for the cords to pass through. You may need a drill to help cut the storage box.
Most people have an outlet like this on their balcony
My outlet looks more like this
Since the box resides outdoors, filtered airflow will prevent dust from accumulating inside of the rig. I chose a filter that is smaller than the sides of the box but big enough that it would allow ample air ventilation. Either a car or furnace filter should work.
Then I measured the filter, marked where I wanted to place the filter on the box and cut along the marked lines to create a hole. I covered the hole with the filter. I got mine from Canadian Tire and the filters are easily found in any hardware store. The more affordable options may be available at dollar stores.
After the box was cut, I arranged the placement of all the components inside the box. You can see how I arranged the mine from the picture below. I put a metal rack inside the box so that I could stack the PSUs on top.
This is what the inside looks like with the lid open
I could have stacked more miners. As per our previous post, we have explained how to calculate your power usage. My balcony outlet is 15 AMP, 120V. Technically speaking, I could support up to 1800 watts in total. This translates to running 2 SC200s at 500 watts each, saving 700 watts for the espresso machine 🙂
I then set up the miner as per the instructions. Once the miner is running, close the lid, and it’s done!
The benefit of the storage box is that it looks way more clean than just having the cables and the machines laid out. You can even decorate the box to suit your aesthetics. Since I am leaving my miners out on the balcony, which I barely use, I left the box as it is.
And that’s my two cents for mining at home. If you feel inspired or would like to share your setup, please feel free to comment down below or tag us on Twitter @epicblockchain.
